As of the 1st of October 2023, the club is affiliated with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC).
This is an amazing step forward for the club, as this comes with numerous benefits, such as:
Combined Liability Insurance for all club members
The BMC provides Combined Liability Insurance cover for our club and its members. The policy covers us for combined liability in connection with hillwalking, climbing and mountaineering. This cover is very comprehensive and covers our members both while at club events and on independent hikes outside of the club! (Amazing right!)
Discounts with over 800 outdoor retailers
LUUHC members can now get access to all BMC discounts on all their outdoor gear purchases when shopping with certain retailers. This includes a number of shops with physical locations in Leeds – such as Cotswold Outdoors, Runners Need, and Snow+Rock.
Online Resources
The BMC provides a wealth of knowledge and advice on their website, so we suggest having a look! This can be anything from recommended routes to advice on gear.
BMC Shop
There are also discounts at BMC’s own online store! Stickers (we know you need more for your water bottle), maps, clothing, and more are all available.

Just to Clarify a few things about your membership with BMC:
By purchasing a membership with LUUHC, you automatically get the Student BMC membership. This isn’t quite the same as Personal BMC membership, but It’s very similar and offers similar benefits. For those wishing to upgrade to a full BMC membership, there is the option to do so.
Club Member upgrade
The BMC has a membership upgrade option for members of BMC affiliated clubs on payment of an additional premium of £16.70. This provides access to the full range of Individual Membership benefits, which include;
4 copies of Summit posted to you directly per year
£10k personal accident insurance
Access to a full range of Individual Member benefits
By upgrading your membership you will also be making a financial contribution to the BMC's vital access, conservation, mountain safety and technical investigation work. You will also be supporting work in representing the needs of climbers, hillwalkers and mountaineers to the government.
If you are already an individual BMC member, we are still required to pay the BMC for your LUUHC club subscription, however, after you have paid your LUUHC subscription you can speak to the BMC directly to have your membership amended to a "club upgrade membership" by contacting office@thebmc.co.uk to avoid paying the BMC fee twice. If you are a member of multiple BMC affiliated clubs, you can reclaim any duplicated BMC subscriptions by contacting the BMC on the above email address
If you have any questions about your insurance, club membership, or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact a committee member! And of course, you are also welcome to contact the BMC for questions as well (They’re very helpful!)
